              Rapportdag 2

                Day 2 Mt Magnet
                2009-08-03 19:28

Fast & dusty. But fun. Bike was ok today. First special I got into a good flow and passed some riders. Stopped and helped a quad who was stuck with problems - I lost 3 min and was back in dust again.
Second special I pushed the pace more and had really fun. Made up some time of the lost time. 38th today (list on safari-web).
Tomorrow is a long day, marathon 700 km total, incl competitive 500 km.
                (Via Sis Eila and Henrik)

                      Leg 3 Report (safari.live)

                      17:51 WST - 4/08/09
Honda riders dominate day three of Safari
Condobolin’s Jacob Smith leads the field in the motorbike section of the Australasian Safari, having moved ahead of his brother Todd on the run between the West Australian towns of Mt Magnet and Leonara on day three of the motorsport marathon.

Jacob Smith holds a narrow 10 second lead over Queenslander, AJ Roberts, with Todd Smith having fallen back to third, 16 minutes 46 seconds behind after setting the pace on the opening two days.

Jacob Smith and Roberts are both on Hondas’ who now have a handy break over the field after eight of the event’s 19 timed stages. However, KTM riders hold the next four positions, and they are sure to challenge over the remaining four days.

Leg three of the 7-day, 3600 kilometre epic journey saw competitors tackle four competitive stages, the longest being the 173 kilometre Noondie Loop stage. Road conditions were rough, sandy and overgrown over much of the route, with vehicle preservation at the forefront of most competitors’ minds.

Jacob Smith didn’t win a stage on his way to taking the lead on his Honda CRF 450X, but consistency is everything on the Safari and he moved into the lead, but with his Honda team-mate, Roberts, so close by, there is growing confidence in the Honda camp that they can secure the title for the Japanese manufacturer.

The other Smith, Todd, lost his lead on stage five after striking trouble. Leading West Australian rider, Ivan Erceg, in fourth.

The leader was pleased to get to Leonora after a difficult day in the West Australian outback.

“It was tough being out front today, because I had to make all the calls on finding the right track,” Jacob Smith said.

“AJ (Roberts) was behind me most of the time, but the bike was good and I had no problems, so it was generally a good day.”

Roberts had endured a tough time following Smith.

“I pulled some good time on Jake (Smith), but I ate his dust all day,” Roberts said.

“You had to travel pretty fast and I’ve never had to hold a bike so fast for so long. The bike has been fantastic, but the course was very easy to stuff up and the navigation was critical.”

Defending champion, Ben Grabham, continued his fight back after Monday’s tyre problems and has moved into fifth place, albeit still nearly an hour off the lead. His brother Damien is out of the event with a suspected broken leg.

Tomorrow sees the Australasian Safari head north-east from Leonora to Laverton over three stages and 301 competitive kilometres. Western Australia’s spectacular outback scenery plays a prominent role tomorrow with some magnificent views, although riders and drivers will have little time to take their eyes off the road.

Annie kör förbi några små sten i West Australiens öken... (nedan)

Day 3, long fast day in dust - Leonora
                        2009-08-04 23:42

today was one of the marathon days, some 700 kms, and 500 of them were competitive split in 3 stages.
the tracks were very dangerous, early morning dust made visibility almost zero and riding at 150 kms/h scary.
also rocky sections and many wash outs and dry river crossings.
i saw a few riders crashed early on and decided to pace myself for the long day. even riding carefully i hit a rock hidden in the shadow of a tree, and made a big "hand stand" before i landed the bike and surprisingly managed to keep it rolling!!! soon after rider #5 "Fishy" flew past me at double speed it felt. a couple of kms later he crashed over a rocky crest. I and a quad stopped and helped him, he was still lying unable to move on the track. he didn't remember anything. i parked my bike on top of the crest so no other rider would hit us while we were assisting. some other riders arrived and called for the doctor, and i could leave. the rest of the day i was really riding sensibly.
at the end i was quite tired and felt my hands, wrist and shoulders ache - but i was pretty happy with my day.
in the bivouac at evening a woman came by and said she had seen an interview with me on the TV news, where i said i had not seen a kangaroo. so she brought a baby kangaroo "bubbles" in a bag so i could hold it - it was so cute. she also showed me "honey ants" that the aborigines eat in the desert. it is an ant that has a pouch ytat you squeeze and the liquid tastes like honey, very good when i tasted it!
at bedtime i could not find my sleeping mat, because Garry had it, so i slept in my sleeping bag on the tent floor... a bit rough. but i had a good pillow at least!!

                              Swedish sauna Princess...

                              Från Australasian DIRT BIKE magazine:

Ben Grabham (två faldigt Safari Moto vinnaren) offered a humorous account of his experience in the Safari’s portable shower block, where he literally bumped into Annie Seel, (the Swedish Husaberg rider of Dakar fame). A diplomatic Grabham said,

“Let’s just say it was like a scene in a Swedish sauna. I wasn’t sure if I’d accidentally stumbled into the women’s side of the shower block, but it turned out she was on the bloke’s side. Oh well.”

450cc i öknen... fördelar och nackdelar...

“I dunno how these engines keep going when they do damage. They run on memory alone, it seems. I mean, at 170kph for extended periods, you’re pushing these 450s so far past their comfort zone.”

Yamaha team boss, Garry Williams, and his candid commentary of the problems team rider Rod Faggotter encountered on Day Two.
